What Happens When Your Web Developer Disappears?
A step-by-step recovery manual for Malaysian SMEs when their web agency goes ghost.

It happens frequently. The freelancer gets a full-time job, or the boutique agency folds, and suddenly your emails bounce and calls go straight to voicemail. Here is how to recover.
Step 1: Secure the Domain
Check who is listed as the administrative contact on your domain. If it's you, immediately log into the registrar and change passwords. If it's the developer, you may need to file a dispute with MYNIC (for .my) or ICANN, providing proof of company registration and invoices.
Step 2: Gain Server Access
Contact the hosting provider directly. Explain the situation. Most reputable hosts have a "death or disappearance" policy. You'll need to provide corporate documentation to prove ownership of the business hosted on their servers.
Step 3: Database & File Backup
Once you have server access, immediately take a full backup of the public_html folder and the MySQL database. Store this safely offline.
Step 4: Password Reset
Reset all CMS administrator passwords, database passwords, and FTP/SSH keys. Remove any unknown user accounts.
Step 5: License Audit
Identify all premium themes and plugins. Purchase your own licenses to ensure you continue receiving critical security updates.
Prevention is cheaper than the cure. Always ensure infrastructure is registered in your company's name from day one.
