Why Your Cloudflare Setup Might Be Slowing You Down

Many Malaysian businesses activate Cloudflare assuming instant speed boosts. However, if misconfigured, traffic from Kuala Lumpur might be routed to a Point of Presence (POP) in Los Angeles, adding 200ms of latency to every request.

1. Verifying the Edge Location

To check which Cloudflare POP is serving your users, append /cdn-cgi/trace to your domain (e.g., https://yourdomain.com/cdn-cgi/trace).

Look for the colo= line.

• colo=KUL means Kuala Lumpur (Ideal).
• colo=SIN means Singapore (Excellent).
• colo=LAX or SJC means your traffic is crossing the Pacific.

If you are on a free plan, Cloudflare does not guarantee KUL routing; you may be routed to SIN. If you are routed to the US, your hosting provider's IP block might be misclassified by GeoIP databases. Contact your host to correct their IP geolocation.

2. Bypassing Cache for Dynamic Routes

Cloudflare caches static assets (images, CSS, JS) automatically. But if you try to "Cache Everything" via Page Rules without bypassing dynamic endpoints, your WooCommerce cart, WordPress admin dashboard, or Next.js API routes will break or serve stale data.

Create a Page Rule (or Cache Rule in the new dashboard) to Bypass Cache:

1. URL: *yourdomain.com/wp-admin/* -> Cache Level: Bypass
2. URL: *yourdomain.com/cart/* -> Cache Level: Bypass
3. URL: *yourdomain.com/checkout/* -> Cache Level: Bypass

3. Tiered Cache Topology

To improve cache hit rates in Southeast Asia, enable Tiered Cache in the Cloudflare caching dashboard. This configures Cloudflare to check a regional upper-tier cache (like Singapore) before asking your origin server in Cyberjaya for the file, drastically reducing origin load.
