The Geography of Cloudflare Routing
Cloudflare has Edge nodes in Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and Johor Bahru (JHB). However, many Malaysian businesses notice their traffic being routed to Singapore (SIN), Hong Kong (HKG), or even Los Angeles (LAX).
This routing anomaly adds 50ms to 200ms to your Time To First Byte (TTFB), negating the benefits of a CDN.
1. Diagnosing the Routing Path
To see your current routing POP, run a simple curl command against the Cloudflare trace endpoint:
curl -s https://yourdomain.com/cdn-cgi/trace | grep colo
If it says colo=LAX, you have a routing issue.
2. Why Does This Happen?
Cloudflare routes traffic based on BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) peering agreements with ISPs (like TM Unifi, Maxis, or TIME). If you are on a Cloudflare Free plan, Cloudflare does not guarantee routing to the closest geographical POP. They route based on the cheapest transit cost. Often, TM Unifi traffic is cheaper to route to Singapore than to the Cyberjaya (CJ1) exchange.
3. How to Force Better Routing
- Upgrade to Pro/Business: Paid Cloudflare plans have higher routing priority and utilize better transit links, almost always ensuring KUL routing for Malaysian visitors.

- Check Your Origin IP Geolocation: Sometimes, the IP provided by your Malaysian host (e.g., ServerFreak) is incorrectly registered as a US IP in MaxMind or other GeoIP databases. Cloudflare thinks the server is in the US. Contact your host to correct their IP WHOIS records.
